Changing Airlines - Baggage through?

I am changing airlines while travelling from BAHRAIN to NEW YORK. First Qatar Airways to London Heathrow and then American Airlines to JFK. Will my checked-in baggage goes through the final destination? Do I have check-in again at Heathrow? I understand both Qatar Airways and American Airlines operate from Heathrow Terminal 3. Am I right?
