What would be the consequences of a 3 mile wide asteroid impact in the middle of Antarctica? ?

Would people around the World be any safer since the impact is in such a remote area? What if no one knew about the impact, what would be the first sign which would indicate to us that something is wrong? And how long after the impact would it take before we would see that sign, indicating a problem?
