How did you find your purpose?

I got married WAY too young (20) and spent all of my twenties being a stay at home wife. College just wasn't an option back then. I got divorced in 2000 and since then have truly struggled to figure out what to do with my life. It isn't that I haven't been trying though. I have tested out a couple vocational programs at a local comm. college, but they didn't feel "right" for me. Someone once told me that your life purpose finds you, but I am rapidly becoming depressed thinking that it has ped me by somehow. I want to earn my living doing something that I am pionate about. Why is this so hard to find? I guess I just need encouragement from someone who knows what this feels like. I want to know how some of you found your life's purpose.
